Jak is Bak

For the lat few months I've been working on with a collection of musicians from around the world as part of the Jak is Bak project.

The project is the brain child of Steve Kuehl who runs the label BWL Recordings.

Its been a pleasure creating original tracks and remixes for this project.
The plan is to have 10 releases out digitally then hopefully vinyl.

At this stage 2 EPs are out on itunes.

Bitchin' Sync Box

I recently received a Bitchin' Sync box made by Bryan Benting.
This is a great little din sync clock box.
Basically it takes clock pulse or din sync and split it to the other din sync ports.
It has 6 din sync sockets which is the same number of din sync clock driven gear that I have.
The added bonus of this is by using something like RV0 Din Sync plugin or the Expert Sleepers Silent Way Din Sync generator I can run all the machines from the computer and have them locked tight without the midi conversion latency or other issues.
Also the box has 2 clock inputs so you can run half the box at one BPM and half the box at another BPM.

Here's a set of pics demonstrating the setup.
I use the RV0 din sync plugin to generate the din sync clock signal.
The signal is a stereo signal that is sent from the channels 3/4 on the MOTU ultralite.
One channel sends tempo the other sends start and stop.
These go into the Bitchin Sync box and is split into all the din sync sockets.
Its a great little box and I'm also now able to use software based shuffle on my 303/606/808 which is great.

M.U.S.E. EP - Devilbeat records

The name and the 3 tracks are a homage of sorts to the old F.U.S.E. tracks from Plus 8 from back in the dark. Long dark twisted acid and lots of analogue goodness.

Here is a hardware live set/ jam I did about a month ago which you can grab and download.
This set also featured on FNOOB.com luvtonez show on the 23rd September 2011 so a big thanks to bathsh3ba for playing my set.

Live 808 pc2 sh101 by DyLABs

Its a totally live jam, no pre written patterns or anything performed on the roland TR808 and SH101.
I guess if my gear ever left the studio a live set might sound something like this.

The beats come from the Roland TR808, weird percussion from Boss PC-2 pedal, the lead synth is the Roland SH-101 and everything is triggered by TR-606. The gear all goes into my Yamaha MG12/4 desk and that has a Boss RRV-10 digital reverb connected.

Made In Melbourne EP

This is a new EP which features one track from me and 3 remixes by local Melbourne Producers.
I wasn't having much studio time available to me while I was writing this, so I thought the remix Ep would be a good way of getting some interesting collaborations happening.
It always good to hear what people come up with when using your stems.
The stems were a lot of 808 rushes and a big chorused 101 pad and the 303 line.

The original track from me is called Introducing.

A new EP from me on local label Hand Made Acid.

Each track title refers to the mode on the 808 in which the track was written.
I've been focusing on the 808 a lot and wanted to use the sequencer for whole tracks but at the same time wanted to try different approaches in my drum programming.

2D Eleven - First Session - Out now on beatport

I recently had a studio session with local Melbourne acid maker Honeysmack.
The collaboration was based around a simple straightforward approach to music making, two guys, two 303's and two 808's jamming out some tracks, recording the sessions and editing down to the best bits. As you can hear there were some FX thrown into the mix but at the end of the day what you hear is straight from the hearts of the machines. This release is out now on beatport and will be available as CD release from Hand Made Acid website later on this year.

TR-808 backplate

This is a Roland TR-808 backplate image I have reworked.
The purpose is to remind me what connections go where.
It has been reversed so it can sit behind the TR-808 facing the player and be read correctly.

Feel free to download and print out it for yourself.
The linked image should be big enough to resize to full TR-808 width.

I'm thinking of laser etching this on wood or metal so its a bit more robust than a print out.

Bad Acid, a new EP coming soon (ish)

My next EP should be out soon. In the next 250 days as the contract say. :)
Its called Bad Acid and its a three tracker.
It features a bit of 909 acid and some tracks with the my new 808.
Its my first EP for 2011 and glad to get some new tracks finished at out there.

Sounds of the Devilfish - A free Roland TB-303 Devilfish Sample Pack

This is something I've been meaning to do for a while and thats sample some of the sounds from my Roland TB-303 Devilfish.

I finally got around to sampling it the other day and I have created a new sample pack I've just uploaded called Sounds of the Devilfish. These sample demonstrate a little of the sonic range of the devilfish modifications on the TB303.
Its contains 14 6 bar loops.
The loops are 3 bar scales repeated twice. the scales go from lower transposed C up to upper transposed C on the TB303 keyboard. The C is repeated in each scale.
It was recorded at a number of settings on the devilfish both as square wave and triangle wave all at 65 BPM.
The loops have been recorded at 24 bit 48 hz aif files.

If you're a ableton live user you can stick them in sampler or use the slice to midi based on transients or 8ths to slice to a drum rack.

Roland TR-606 modded by Exfade

I recently got my Roland TR-606 back from exfade after some serious modifications.
Each sound has a range of mods to it , whilst still being the basic Roland TR-606.
I'm pretty happy with the mods and the kick drum is a beast with the long decay.
The 606 itself is a bad way though so it looks like it might need a new sound select and volume pot or at least a good clean.

You can hear all the different drum sounds and their various permutations here, feel free to download and slice, for your own projects. These are recorded out of the main out rather than the individual outs at the back so there is a bit of cross noise.

Roland TR-808 Drum Machine

So I finally bought a Roland TR-808 drum machine.

The TR-808 is got was modified by Robin Whittle , the same guy who does the devilfish mods on the tb303. Some of the mods such as the trigger in may not be by Robin.

You can see the 808 and its mods below. I look forward to adding this drum machine to my setup and making some new tracks with it.

This is a new acid track featuring the devilfish and a 909 - its got a bit of an odd time signature 9/16 ths but the beat is working 4/4 styles.

New Free TR-707 Sample Pack

I have resampled my TR-707 and this time it is quite an extensive lot of samples.
These have been recorded at 24 bit 48khz.
Each of the drum sounds were sampled as a loop at 30BPM, and as one hits without accent, with accent one and with accent two on.
There is also snare loops with varying flam settings.
There is also bass drum loops with various shuffle settings for groove extraction.

How to sync blogger and myspace blogs

Even though myspace seems to be dieing a slow and excruciating death, some people still use it and play tracks and visit pages. For a while now I've been looking at a way to synch this blogger blog with my myspace blog.

In the end I have not been able to synch anything to my myspace blog, instead I have added an RSS Reader module to my profile page and it reads the RSS feed from this blog and shows it on my myspace profile .

The myspace app I used is called RSS Reader, and you can get it here.

If you look at my myspace profile http://www.myspace.com/dylabs, you can see the RSS Reader module. It may not look great but it does allow me to syndicate this blog.

So if you are looking to sync blogger to a myspace blog I suggest don't bother, use the RSS Reader instead.

The usual pattern length in 16 steps but in this video I show how to program a 4 step pattern, a 2 step pattern , a 5 step pattern and 7 step pattern.
The video also demonstrates that a tb303 never really deletes pattern note data only timing data.

Work in Progress:Word Smith EP

I'm currently working on a new EP which will be titled "word smith"
The concept of the EP is to use the notes from A to G to create words
then to use those words as patterns for the tb303 to create some word based acid
I have started a few tracks already, these have a sparse stripped down feel as I'm using only the tb303 and the tr707 as an accompaniment.

The first few tracks were short words such as FAG, BAD and DEAD. The later tracks have slightly longer words, the latest of which is CAGEFACE. Once I settle on the words and patterns more will be uploaded. Hopefully this release will be out soon on Hardwave records, if they like the tunes.

I also just realised you can spell CABBAGED - aah the fun of words!!

Charley and the 808

So before I send it off I have sampled each drum hit at full volume with accent on but set to zero and recorded from zero accent to full accent over a number of hits. Each sample is 24 bit at 48kHz aif file. The samples are on soundcloud and are free to download and use.

My latest synth, a Casio CZ-5000

I just got my first new (second-hand) synth for a long while, picked this up on ebay, it needs a little bit of work on some of the keys, but apart from that all seems to work fine.
Its a Casio CZ-5000.
It uses phase distortion as its sound source. It has not filters but from the quick play I've had with it, it has a really nice vibrato and stereo chorus. It is quite simple to program and edit patches. I have managed to find a bunch of patches on the net for it, so I look forward to loading some of those up and giving it a run.

Gooned - new kinda track

This track started out life as a bit of messing around with a sh101 sequence.
The sequence in the sh101 is triggered by LT trigger out from my tr606 with a bit of live building and the such.
The sequence is then fucked with by taking the Ht trigger out from my tr606 and running it through a Digitana Micro Punk Robot and sending the output of that into the CV in to the sh101.
I later added drums and FX to the sequence.

last month I set up the monthly acid pattern group, the idea is each month a tb303 pattern is posted and the members of the group take that pattern either audio or data, plug it into their tb303s and make tracks from the pattern.

remix for Dan303 - MK 303 (devilfish remix)

this was a quick (as in 24 hours) remix for Dan303's new self released album.
You can read all about it on Dan's twitter account

I took his stems and kept the big beat and some of the more ambient percussion and the hats.
I resampled the ambient percussion and made a little dark tune out of that.
The devilfish line was dropped over the arrangement then chopped up a fair bit. The acid serves as a counter point to the dark tune. Then whole thing is drenched in big delays and plenty of reverb.

SH101 synthesis : a new track SH-SYNNER

After watching a short video on http://www.dinsync.info/ blog about making percussion from the sh101 and mc202 I thought I'd give it a go but use the SH101 to make all the track elements.

What I ended up with is an old UK bleepy techno style track, the sh101 has heaps of bass and I had to transpose it to get it a bit more audible, the kick is nice and meaty and balanced out with the classic techno click. The percussion make use of the noise oscillator. All other sounds were a mix of modulation, frequency and ADSR.
All the sounds were triggered using the tr-606 into the SH101.

Here is the final track, it maybe one for the Colin Dale school of Abstract Dance. If you have some good subs then turn it up.

yes I've been on somewhat of a remix roll at the moment.
The following remix is for a Melbourne based group called Backroom Reality.
You can have a listen to the original version of the track on thier soundcloud page.

I took the track, mapped it out and dropped a devilfish line over the track, using a few takes to get it to sit right, worked on the bass, dropping it down a bit and getting rid of some of the stereo elements in it, reworked the voice subtly to make it more metallic and robot like, with the percussion I made it more metallic and reworked some of it's timing wise and tried to give it a bit more presence with the acid, and with the rising shepherd tones moved them into more of a 50's Sci-fi type space.

My Name Is

This is a new track I've been working on.
I have used the composition technique Composition From a Different Angle: An Intro to 12-tone from instructor Jerry Gates.
Its an interesting way of generating compositions, what it doesn't give me is the timings but with the tb303 its pretty quick to change those to get a pattern that works well.

The main acid is from the devilfish tb303, the other synth line is from the sh101, the pad is from the tx7 using a Juno 106 patch, all the compositional elements use the 12 tone technique, the drums are from the novation drum station and the audio samples are from Apollo 11 mission recording.

Lychee Martini - Through To Me Remix Competition

This is my remix of the Lychee Martini - Through to Me track
From the track I took the main vocal sample "I'm too high" and used that as the pad sound throughout, both time stretching it and rerecording it in live whilst dragging loop points to make give it that endless feel but at the same time progressing through the sample. There is also a couple of the percussion elements from the track, the thud and the clang and well as some little click elements.
The main kick is from an 808 and might be a bit too bassy so might need to clean the bottom end a tad.

Drumstation and Drum Racks

A while back I bought a Novation drumstation and for a while I have bee running it using my Korg Er1 in a x0x style.
This is good for basic rhythms and hands on programming but is limited to only 10 sounds in a 4 bar block on the drumstation and doesn't allow for velocity or any other type of modifications.

So I decided to run the drum station from Abelton.

Initially I set up two midi channels one with a drum rack in it with the drum rack holding a short silent sample in each simpler and one track that had an external instrument in it that received the midi from the drum rack channel. This seemed to work ok but wasn't very elegant and meant I'd have to have two channels each time I want to use the drumstation.

So I looked at putting the external instrument into the drum rack.
At first I couldn't get this to work and upon further exploration of the drum rack's IO it was taking the C0 note and sending a C3 this would make sense with simpler but not good for external hardware. So a simple tweak of the recieve play note fixed that up as shown below.

The next problem I had was if I had an instance of an external instrument in each rack I'd end up with an audio inputs for each note in the rack, with each playing all the drum sounds at once. So this wasn't very elegant at all.

So after some further investigation , thanks ableton forum and a bit of RTFM I found that you could create an additional chain in a drum rack that received all notes.

So I started again and this time created a chain that took a note in and sent the same note out. Then I created a new chain that took all the midi notes and this is where I placed the external instrument to send midi date out to the novation drumstation.
You can see how thats set up below.

So now I have a full working drum rack for my drumstation and can easily access all the sounds (8 sounds at once) from ableton live. And using the same technique I have setup a drum rack for my Korg ER1 aswell.

This works with drumstation GM sound set in 808 mode other wise the 909 and 808 kits are mixed up.

I was playing a simple scale to my little girl which she was enjoying and from that came this little jam
There were some interesting things going on in the lower end of the scale so reworked the pattern and came up with this
tb303 devilfish lead synth, sh101 on bassline duty, two tr606's one doing kick the other doing snare.
Gate out from tb303 driving the sh101, the tb303 and sh101 16 beats to bar, the tr606 are on 12 beats to bar mode and double timed
This is running at 60 bpm but having the drums on 12 step 3/4 double time to the tb303/sh101 16 step 4/4 time gives the difference in speeds between the two.

Getting to grips with the Devilfish

So i've had my devilfish about a week or so and I'm slowly getting to grips with it and how it sounds.
It is a complete transformation of the way my roland tb303 used to sound and at first it was kind of off putting as I couldn't get the sounds I used to be able to get out of it, but I've gone back and read through all the material that Robin gave me about the devilfish and with a bit of moderation my tb303 is definitely in there , its just been sonically expanded a lot.

This is a short track that shows of a new feature of the devilfish which is the unending note, there are two decay pots, one for accents and one for notes, and the old decay pot is now the volume envelope generator and it allows the unending notes.

Here is a short jam track which shows it off, the devilfish is also driving the roland sh101, and the drumstation is providing the 808 kit.

Mellow Acid Jam with Devilfish and SH101

It was a sunny Sunday and we all went down the beach this morning, after a restful afternoon lunch I fired up the kit

This is some mellow sunny Sunday afternoon acid, very ambient, drenched in reverb and delay, and with the devilfish's accent button and accent decay it allows for a greater level of jamming within patterns.

The SH101 sequence is run from the gate out of the devilfish and into abeton and using TAL reverb and delay, the initial melody is from the congas on the fake08 (drumstation and korg er1 combination), then the 303 picks up the same pattern, tight timing from the bitstream3.x din sync out.

Enjoy the mild acid, and I hope those of you in the northern hemisphere can feel the sunshine this jam is drenched in.

My latest purchase has been the analogue renaissance ts-303 acid screamer distortion and overdrive pedal

Basically it adds distortion but has the ability to keep the dynamics of the tracks thats being distorted, which is great for acid tracks and drums and any other type of music that wants distortion but also dynamics

this keeps the devilfish in time, the er1 is run from the midi out of the bitstream
the midi out of the er1 runs the novation drum station, giving me my fake 08
or I could switch kits and have a fake 09

today I picked up my post devilfish 303, its taken the 303 from a little acid machine to some crazy acid beast
Here is a little demo of it in action, the pattern is on the devilfish, the accent out of the devilfish is running a sequence on the 303, also the cv out of the devilfish is going into the filter socket on my sh101, and the audio out from the sh101 is going to the FM in on the devilfish which modulations the devilfish's filter

a new bit of kit : a Yamaha ED-10

So after waiting for ages for a reasonably priced Boss PC-2 to show up, it never did by the way.
I bit the bullet and purchased the alternative, a Yamaha ED-10
It is a drum synthesizer similar to the PC-2, it can take audio in to trigger drums, its works great from the Roland 606 trigger outs and also responds to the CV out from the TB303 but in a slightly different way than my Boss HC-2.

Its a pretty sweet bit of kit, it can power another 5 devices from the power in, if you wanted to make a drum kit, and the audio mix in means you could daisy chain a whole bunch of these together.

continuing on with the sh101 experiments, this track gastrik uses the sh101 trick underneath a strong 303 bassline.
Drums are from the tr606 exclusively.
This is some dark acid that builds to get darker and darker.

i was going over some old files and found this tip about sequencing the roland sh101, so using this trick I sequenced in a little pattern and using the tr606 to play it here is a little live track, just the roland sh101 and tr606, distortion from the boss OS-2 and a little phaser in live.

Subject: 101 sequencer tricks

Ok, I accidentaly sent my last post to someone on the list, but that's ok
cause I was confusing myself a bit here (on account that the 101 was still
going through the ms20. whatever)

here is the sequencer function that cannot be duplicated by a midi driven
(midi to cv) system.
this is one reason i often use the 101 sequencer (even though it doesn't
support my hard drive).

sequence something with some legato steps (hold down "hold" when you enter
the note) and some normal steps.

vcf freq = 4
env = 10

vca = env

env = gate VERY IMPORTANT
decay = 6
sustain = 0

those are the important bits.

while the sequencer steps through, change the decay up and down.

The envelope only retriggers on non-legato steps, so legato steps trail off
into silence with delicate little arcs (esp. with portamento).

env = lfo will retrigger on each trigger in.

It is much easier to try this than to explain this. There is a lot of
sequencer fun and subtlety here, so look out.

keep the resonance down, just the square wave (no pulse width), a bit of
portamento and program octave jumps for lots of chicago trax style.

here are a couple of quick screen capture videos of gate effects in live
The first shows how to use a gate to send the accented notes to a delay then using a sidechained autofilter to filter the delay to the drum beat, then using effects rack and flipping the gate to have the notes still play but this time without the accented notes
I use this style of effect with the tb303 a fair bit, its a good way to have fun just with the accented notes

The second shows how to sidechain the gate using a drum beat and then using effects rack to send through the dry signal
I use this effect wih tb303 to get other sounds to follow the acid pattern also to get synths to follow drum patterns

this is an acid track I started on today - made mostly from samples of the boss dr110 hence the name - doctor ten ten
also featuring the classic roland tr727 sounds - this is a slowish, old school style acid track - but there is a smidge of modern digital dirt in there - wanted to keep the tb303 sound very thing in this, so its EQ'd back a lot
the only bit I'm not sure about is the conga with the grain delay - sometimes I really like it and other times its all a bit hmm-

I was working on something slower and old school around the 125-130 mark
this is mostly tr707, with some 727 aswell
the synth lines are all from the sh101
its slower and more housey and definitely old school

i was playing around and wrote the old batman tv theme on the tb303 and the sh101, playing them off against each other
I transposed some of the notes, added some slides and changed the timings on the 303 and on the 101 I played the D# D C# rather than D#D# D D C# C# triggering the sequence using the tr606, whilst the tb303 gate out drove the 101 modulation

Dropped in a tom line from some 909 samples as well basic kick, snare and hats, the accompanying snare, and hats come from the tr606, the clap lines from the tr909

Roland SH101 filter mod experiment

I have a kenton filter and modulation mod on my Roland SH101
this allows the filter and modulation to be controlled my a midi to cv type device or any cv signal

this little experiment the sh101 has a single note sequence trigger by the tr606
the tb303 is playing a simple one octave scale and the cv out from the tb303 is going into the sh101 filter in and the gate out from the tb303 is going into the modulation in, and while the tb303 is playing I use the pitch shift on the tb303 to shift the cv signal up and down

and this is what it sounds like
